…serves AKHA notice of impeachment.

In the early hours of Wednesday, October 18, 2023, the plenary session of the 7th Ibiono Ibom Legislative Assembly witnessed yet another twist in its proceedings.

The Plenary session which was presided over by Hon. Udeme Sunday, Leader, Ibiono Ibom Legislative Council had in attendance 10 out of 13 Councilors served a notice of impeachment on Hon. Ekopimo Polycarp Edet, Executive Chairman Ibiono Ibom Local Government Council.

Drama ensued when the Clerk and Deputy Clerk were missing as at the time of the plenary; a situation which is strange to the proceedings of the house.

After the opening prayer by the Leader, he invoked a section of the Standing Order which enables the appointment of a Councilor to serve as a Recorder in the event of the absence of the Clerk and Deputy Clerk.

A motion moved by the Deputy Leader Hon. Kufre Eyo and Seconded by Hon. Elijah Uwak saw Hon. Idorenyin Etuk, Chief Whip act as a Recorder as stipulated in the Local Government Administrative Law 2017 (as amended).

The proceedings for the day’s plenary was thereafter read by the Deputy House Leader and adopted by the 10 Councillors present at the plenary. The Impeachment notice of Hon. Ekopim Edet was then read and subsequently moved by the Deputy Leader, Hon. Kufre Eyo and Seconded by Hon. Idorenyin Umoren.

After due deliberation, the House unanimously resolved to serve an impeachment notice on the Chairman for misappropriation of funds and gross misconduct.

The Leader, Hon. Udeme Sunday thereafter called for a motion for adjournment. The motion was moved by the Deputy House Leader, Hon. Idorenyin Asuquo and seconded by Hon. Emmanuel Maurice at about 2:25pm.

The Impeachment Notice signed by 9 councilors out of 13 was submitted to the Executive Chairman through the Record Officer, and copies of the Impeachment Notice were submitted to the appropriate quarters including the Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House Of Assembly (AKHA).
